JOHN BOSCO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (JOBITECH), OBOSI
Brief Profile
The Salesians of Don Bosco is a religious congregation founded in 1854 by St. John Bosco – a Catholic priest from Turin, Italy in order to take care of young people especially the poor and the marginalized. His aim was to prepare them for life by teaching them various trades and forming in them strong religious values. The dream of Don Bosco was to extend his missionary work to Africa. No one imagined that this dream will manifest itself so fast, as his Salesians (Brothers and Fathers) continue his mission. Thanks to Don Egidio Vigano, sdb his 7th Successor, who facilitated the realization of this dream in Obosi.
The First Salesian Missionary, Don Riccardo Castellino arrived Onitsha on 31st January, 1989 (Don Bosco’s Feast Day). Meanwhile, Fr. Luc Van Looy, the Councilor for Salesian Mission then used to collaborate with the local, civil and religious authorities. He haven received invitation letter from Archbishop Stephen N. Ezeanya on 2nd February, 1987 started the Obosi Mission under Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha. The Archbishop requested Salesians presence to address the needs of the young people especially the working class. Don Vittorio Albasini, sdb and Don Nicola Ciarapica, sdb also arrived Onitsha in 1989. They established a temporary Salesian Community in Obosi at 53Oraifite Street, Awada from where they work at ‘Iba Pope’ Parish.
On 22nd October, 1989, Don Gaetano Galbusera, the Provincial during his first canonical visit accompanied by Don Vittorio, Don Riccardo Castellino and Don Nicola, conducted an investigation on the site where the ‘Paradise in the Bush’ will be erected as the permanent Salesisan Community. Thanks to Monsignor Nathaniel Obiagba, who facilitated the realization of this dream! On 29th August, 1991, the Salesians moved from their temporal residence to their permanent Community at St John Bosco Youth Centre, Ibolo Obosi. Within this period, the first Machine Operators’ Course was managed by Mr. Robert Secosana a Filipino.
On 1st March, 1992, the foundation stone for the Vocational Training Centre dedicated to St. John Bosco was blessed by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. S.N. Ezeanya, on the occasion of the commissioning of ST JOHN BOSCO YOUTH CENTRE by His Excellency, Chief Dr. Chukwuemeka Pius Ezeife (Governor of Anambra State). Rev. Bro. Carlo M. Bacalla was appointed the Director of Training and same year, the first set of 12 students started the 2-year course in industrial electricity. The aim was to select, prepare and form future local instructors from among the students.
At this initial stage, the Salesian Adriatic Province in Italy with the aid of some benefactors financed the construction of the present facilities and buildings, while the technical schools of this same organization supplied the first set of machinery and equipment for the training. In 1993, due to the necessity of acquiring more training equipment, the Salesians requested for technical assistances from their Mission Procure in Germany. They granted financial support for the center’s program and supplied the needed training equipment for 5 courses: Mechanical Technology, Industrial Electricity, Secretarial/ Business Studies, Typing and Tailoring.
In 1996, 110 students graduated from the Institute and after the first graduation, the Past Pupils’ Association was established. Later on, the Salesian Cooperators and Devotees of Mary Help of Christians Association (ADMA) also emerged from the John Bosco Youth Centre. Hence, the Institute consequently has produced many priests and brothers from among the students.
Since 1992, JOBITECH Obosi has been a stakeholder in technical education in Nigeria and has contributed to the wealth of technicians working in varied industries in the country. From 2016, the 5 Courses offered were reduced to 3 Courses, while the Institute also introduced a new Course in Renewable Energy (Solar) and fundamentals of engine.
Generally, our students/trainees are trained not just to be competent technicians, also to be honest citizens and good christians (as responsible people). Looking at our course titles, the Mechanical course offers training in bench work, metal fabrication, machining skills, CNC lathe/milling and fundamentals of engine. The course is an employable technical-vocational competence course in machining, manufacturing, industrial management and maintenance skills. In the Electrical course, the trainees perform installation in various electrical wiring methods, motor control/winding, energy generation and transmission, instrumentation, automation, etc. Under Renewable Energy; trainees are exposed to solar installation and maintenance. In Computer course, the trainees are trained in both hard/software; troubleshooting and maintenance, basic computer knowledge, programming, web designing, oracle, graphic and designing, etc.
The program also includes added courses that will build and enhance the communication skills, team spirit, personality and integrity building, making them competent technicians and safety conscious professionals.
